Weapon Comparison: Melee vs Wand vs Fist
The weapon lines compared on damage, resource economy and fight type - with the verdict for every situation in the game.

Quick Answer: Which Weapon Type Should You Lead With?
Melee (swords, hammer, club) is the stamina-sustainable default — big single hits on the SP bar, best behind a 60-70% block shield. Wands trade raw DMG for MP-cost flexibility with riders (+SP, +HP) and pair with the spell toolkit. Fists are the challenge-run line with their own achievement. The honest verdict from launch data: melee for bosses, wands for open maps and packs, fists for glory.
| Line | Resource | Best At | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swords (Alloy 187 / Dagger 104 DMG) | SP per swing | Boss duels, shield-first play | SP starvation in long fights |
| Wands (Stone 104 / Serpent 50 DMG) | MP per cast | Packs, ranged openers, riders | MP pools smaller than SP pools |
| Hammer & Club (58 / 34 DMG) | SP per swing | Corridor brawls, stun setups | Slower — telegraphed exchanges |
| Fist (14 DMG) | 8 SP | The Bare Hands achievement | Everything |
Against Bosses: Shield First
Both documented boss fights reward the same shape: a blocking shield (Metal Buckler -60%, Oval -70%) plus the heaviest affordable melee. The Dungeon Master fight is a stamina war across four-weapon swing patterns; the castle's corruption source assumes a completionist kit. Wands support — Freeze Ball's control and Wound Reversal's lifesteal are boss-legal — but the damage floor comes from melee.
Against Packs and Open Maps: Wands First
The Abandoned Forest screenshot is the case study: Fireball burns a Stag Beetle pack for 3 per turn while Wound Reversal keeps the caster alive, all before melee closes. Open maps (Rocky Desert, Sandy Beach) give spells the sightlines they want; corridors (Sewer, Dungeon) compress the fight back into melee range. Build both bars — HP, SP and MP all matter by the glacier.
The Fists-Only Challenge
The Bare Hands achievement (1.1%) sits beside Veteran (1.1%) and the run 2+ achievements as the game's challenge tier. Fists at 14 DMG and 8 SP are a real weapon line, not a placeholder — but the achievement is named Bare Hands for a reason. Attempt it after your first story clear, with the ring pair and Supers doing the heavy lifting.
